Nine to Five

Tara K.

  • As the price of living increases and our natural environment declines due to global warming, adulthood looks more and more daunting by the second. In an effort to capture the coming-of-age disassociation held by many kids in their late teens, my piece Nine to Five portrays a wide eyed, neurotic figure crouched over a fluorescent computer screen.

It tells a tale of inevitability; desk jobs, cubicles, and conformity. This is aided by a fisheye perspective that distorts the subject, as well as a color palette of futuristic blues and greens. My digital painting aims to pose the question…

When did we lose our creativity and innocence in this rat-race of growing up?

Is there a way to get it back?

  • Creating surreal and heavily stylized artwork has helped me build a strong sense of personal identity as a queer woman of color. Going forward, I will continue to tell stories that challenge cultural norms and represent the voices of the unheard.
