  • I adore my great-grandmother, who passed away at the age of 99 in July. She always told me stories of Chinese folktales, and I enjoyed spending time with her. I wanted to celebrate her life by creating an artwork on one of our favorite Chinese folktales that she first told me about when I was six years old. It was a story of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, which occurs around August every year based on the Lunar calendar. My great-grandmother described the beautiful dress worn by the Moon Goddess, and I remember so vividly how much I loved it. It was silky and flowy, simply full of elegance.

This year was the first year that I celebrated without my dear great-grandmother. She had such an artistic sense and loved all sorts of crafty work. I bought a box of beads with her one year to create jewelry. There were about 22800 glass seed beads in the set! I incorporated these beads in this piece of artwork as it reminded me of the days when my great-grandmother and I made necklaces and bracelets together. I hope my piece can reflect the happy memories I had with her.

  • Creativity is my way of conveying my limitless imagination, thoughts, and feelings on everyday human connections, and it gives me a voice and sense of uniqueness. It is also my way of coping with the loss of loved ones in my life and finding peace from within.
