Mother vs. Self

Shruthakeerthi S.

  • This portrait of my mother was inspired by the sacrifices she took to raise my sister and I. I grew up in a family that was surrounded with the Indian Classical arts, even though we were often in communities comprised with non-Indians. My mom always made and effort to instill that pride for our culture through language, arts, etc... She did this no matter where we moved to or who all we interacted with. Her love for the arts comes form my Grandma, who's a classical singer, and her own interest in Bharatanatyam (a South Indian dance form). But over the years of raising to children and moving constantly, she was never able to consistently feed that passion. Nonetheless, she tried, and still does, to perform and continue learning the art form, as much as possible. It is her way of expressing creativity.

The dressing for the photo is the traditional jewelry for Bharatanatyam performances, with the stark B&W contrast signifying the past and all she had to leave behind, versus who she really is. I chose to add no color in the composition to highlight the texture and emphasize the shadows. The medium is 44mm digital film.

  • Creativity is in everything I do. I've always loved making/tinkering and art is one very few ways I'm truly able to connect with others. I find that 3D Design & Art, as well as, Visual Media helps me convey my chaotic "brainstream" onto an understandable platform.
