Moon Phases

Indigo P.

  • This art piece was the final project in my art class, and we were allowed to freely explore all materials as a culmination of the skills that we had learned. I loved having creative freedom, and I wanted to make something that speaks to me as a person, so I chose to use moon phases to represent my interest in astrology. This piece took inspiration from many things, and I went into it not really knowing what the final outcome would be, but just figuring it out as I went, which is how I think my creativity flourishes best. When making the piece I was really into Radiohead, so I took inspiration from the color scheme of a lot of their album covers, to convey a futuristic and melancholy feeling in the artwork. I started with a big piece of paper, and filled all the space with red and orange acrylic paint, enhancing the ombre using oil pastels to make it seem like a sunset. I wanted it to feel like a scenery, but also unusual, so I put the mountain like shapes upside down at the top of the paper. For these I used a collage method, ripping off pieces of paper and then creating mountains with them. Once I had finished the mountains and the hills and spikes at the bottom of the piece, it was framed nicely but it was still not done. I needed to add a main subject in the middle, and so I decided to add in the moon phases, giving the piece an outer space-y feel and creating negative space with the white paint.

  • I have loved art ever since I was little, and through high school art classes I have been able to be more adventurous and explore more mediums, stepping out of my comfort zone. This had led me to produce successful and creative work that I am very proud of.
