Looking Beyond

Through this art piece I wanted to express the feeling of uncertainty we all face when thinking about the future. I wanted to express how I was excited yet still nervous about what the future holds. I drew myself looking beyond with my head tilted upward to signify my aspirations of moving up in the world. At this time in life, I was considering many different career options and wanted to make sure that I was making the right choice. I added a bright highlight in my eye to show how I was looking towards a bright future. I added several other highlights on my nose and lips to further emphasize this point. I used a low angle to dramatize the piece to make my decision seem very important. I contrasted this by using a white background to show how unimportant my decision seems to the outside word. For my clothes, I drew myself with my old soccer jersey. This represented the fact I knew that some careers were not feasible. Even though I loved soccer, I knew that it was not a realistic possibility. I wanted to show how even though I realized it was not realistic, I was still holding on to the hope that it was. I used graphite pencils and made the entire piece in greyscale. I didn't want to cloud my reality with colors. I wanted to be able to decide where I knew that I would be happy with it in the future.

I like to do art in order destress and find solutions to my problems. When I explore my creativity, I introduce myself to many different perspectives and ways of thought. This helps me understand different perspectives even in other fields in my everyday life.
