This piece of artwork is a portrait of my grandpa in the midst of happiness as my father himself had caught such pure, unfiltered joy on camera. I chose to illustrate roses in the background since in Chinese culture, red symbolizes luck and happiness and wards off any evils, which is what I wish for my grandpa. Using graphite pencil to sketch his portrait as well as watercolor for bright red pigments, I was able to explore his unique facial features, the delicate wrinkles and each impurity of his skin, which were challenging yet adventurous to imitate.

Not only does it allow me to find peace within myself, exploring and expressing creativity also helps me focus on the intricate details of my life. I am brought to cherish my life, even the smallest and blurriest of memories, that allow me to transform my creativity onto paper.
