Joy

Iris T.

  • This piece of artwork is a portrait of my grandpa in the midst of happiness as my father himself had caught such pure, unfiltered joy on camera. I chose to illustrate roses in the background since in Chinese culture, red symbolizes luck and happiness and wards off any evils, which is what I wish for my grandpa. Using graphite pencil to sketch his portrait as well as watercolor for bright red pigments, I was able to explore his unique facial features, the delicate wrinkles and each impurity of his skin, which were challenging yet adventurous to imitate.

  • Not only does it allow me to find peace within myself, exploring and expressing creativity also helps me focus on the intricate details of my life. I am brought to cherish my life, even the smallest and blurriest of memories, that allow me to transform my creativity onto paper.
