Girl With the Pearl Earbuds

I created this piece for a project in my art class with the prompt, "art in society". I decided to take this prompt literally and depict the subject of Johannes Vermeer's iconic painting, Girl with a Pearl Earring, in the context of modern society. I love this iconic piece because it captures a moment that feels genuine and vulnerable and evocative as if you have just startled the subject from her thoughts. I wanted to capture this emotion in a girl you might see today. I changed her coat into a hoodie, her hair wrap into a ponytail, and her earrings into earbuds. I made the background the home screen of a phone because I see that as the frontier of modern society. I worked mainly with acrylics for the portrait as well as gold pigment for the apps in the background. I hope that this painting honors Vermeer's original piece and shows the transcendence of art across time.

Art is a vital part of my personality and a source of joy and comfort. Creating art allows me to process my private thoughts and emotions and turn them into something that can be felt by others. I strive to make art that connects and uplifts those who view it in the same way that art supports me.
