Delicate

Bel B.

  • My piece is called "delicate" and it is a wall sculpture. The piece is called "delicate" because I wanted to demonstrate the struggles many women, such as myself, face with unrealistic beauty standards. I wanted to make a sculpture about this topic to promote the idea that we are delicate people and we shouldn't push ourselves or other people to follow ridiculous vanity standards. I made this sculpture by covering my body in plaster strips to create a cast. I then added doilies and lace with white gesso to create a softer, more intricate, and dainty look. I decided to cast my own body instead of someone else's because I wanted this piece to feel more personal to me since its meaning is something I am growing to learn. Elements and Principles of design I wanted to showcase in this piece are balance and texture. Balance is represented in the asymmetry of the cut in the torso that goes from the neck to the bottom left of the stomach, creating balanced halves. Texture can be seen in the roughness of the layered doilies and lace.

  • Exploring and Expressing my creativity has impacted my life in a positive and eye-opening way. Through my art, I can express emotions I can not put into words. Being able to express myself through creativity has exposed me to many ways of self-expression in my identity.
