control

Devika M.

  • Through this piece I wanted to explore the control that society holds over BIPOC bodies especially those of brown/black women and the ways that capitalism and industrialization systemically dehumanize folks of color. I felt really drawn towards hair as both a form of expression and a form of control and that’s why I decided to have the braids turn into electrical cords.

  • Weaving together the different threads of my experiences, interests, and emotions, everything I create expresses a second of stillness where I have the space to learn about myself. Each victory, each struggle, each smudge of ink works together to create a beautiful complicated mess of art.
