Change

Gurleen H.

  • Today’s society seeks perfection and advancement, resulting in the underlying issues to just remain in the underlay - this is what I continuously strive to depict in my work. I envisioned the idea of standards of American culture defying ethnic beauty. Growing up in America as an Indian, I struggled to find confidence in my heritage while trying to fit into American culture, but I grew to embrace and love myself regardless. The monotone colors emphasize the brown eyes, showing my innocence that I am unaware of the severity of changing my face to resemble what America considers beautiful as shown by the surgical marks.

  • From unrealistic body standards, to discrimination and stereotypes in the eyes of the general public, I try to express my itching thoughts and feelings of subjects that plague society as a whole or even what seems inconsequential in our day to day lives.
