This gouache piece named "Carry On" depicts a barren and empty city street in perspective, covered by a layer of blue smoke that takes up the entire sky, and lights the entire landscape in a bright cobalt blue. There are thirteen ravens that populate the street, as well as one figure who is primarily in shadow, reaching out to one of the birds. The entire piece is in shades of blue and grey, with a subtle gradation from light to dark from the top of the canvas. For this piece, I planned out the values and composition extremely thoroughly, with many graphite and pastel sketches so that the image came out exactly as I wished. I spent a lot of time researching the symbolism I was going to include as well, especially with my color and subject choices.
