Candlelight

Olivia I.

  • I have always been entranced by light and its many forms. Such as with fire, something that has been around for centuries, in the way it moves, and the impact it can have on its surrounding environment: the colors it reveals, the shapes it creates, the multitude of feelings it can inspire. I have always loved to have candles around and to do tasks by their soft light. Though the photo I based the painting on was one I had taken a few years ago, it is still one of my favorite photos I have ever taken. The warm tones of the flame and the way they shone through the exterior of the candle, creating a new array of colors that danced on the glass. The rays of light produced by the flames that the camera was able to capture. The bright colors in the flame itself. It was all of these small details that made me love that photo so much. Finding myself looking at it once again quite recently, I was inspired to paint it. I wanted to capture something as fleeting and short-lived, yet still incredibly alive and full of movement, as the small flame of a candle and put it on a canvas. I wanted to make it live a little longer, and to keep its beauty and spirit alive.

  • By exploring and expressing my creativity through visual art, I am able to convey messages, ideas, and emotions that I might not otherwise know how to express. Though art, I can also allow myself to relax by doing something I truly enjoy, which helps with the anxiety and stress from everyday life.
