Barbalade

Sasha L.

  • "Barbalade" is a jazz ballad tune for alto saxophone, piano, bass, and drums. Live saxophone is home recorded, rhythm section is MIDI, mixed and produced in Logic Pro.

Sometime in 2019, I wrote the first draft of this song with my former teacher Barbara. Three years later, I rediscovered the tune and decided that I needed to turn it into a full song. I spent multiple hours every day experimenting, sketching, writing, playing, rewriting, recording, and mixing. Although only the main motifs remain from the original, it still always makes me think of Barbara and how she was one of first people who introduced the idea of a music career and taught me so much about scoring and notation.

  • Composing and producing music allows me to express my most real emotions without having to use my words. When I feel down, instead taking it out on other people I channel my feelings through MIDI sounds. But when I'm happy I want to share my joy through music, as it is the universal language.
