Moving On

Everything that surrounds me is a song.
To my ears, the bustle of a restaurant is a chorus of chatter, the turn signal in my mother’s car is a metronome ticking at 130 beats per minute, the windshield wipers match the tempo of my favorite childhood song, the high school bell is a raging C natural, the footsteps of high school students are a lagging, sleep deprived percussion. The world around me is not an overwhelming beehive of sounds, but rather, a song encompassing everything I hear.
I wake up everyday and hear music, create music, and understand music. Music elevates my state of mind, and brings me to a level of self-understanding in a way that nothing else can. I craft my own melodies, between the lines I weave harmonies that accompany a feeling that can only be described in song. It is easier for me to understand the complexity of the world when I view it through the lens of musicianship.
There is no right or wrong in music. Music can be anything I want it to be. Music is my anticipation, my despair, my anger, my passion. A song that encompasses the storm of tangled emotions within me, woven out into a melodic tapestry, an expressive, barely tangible feeling.
As experience life’s uncertainties and infinite possibilities, I am beginning to understand that the journey is just as important as the goal, and the process of creating a song is just as valuable as the final product. I contemplate many aspects of my future - what career I’ll choose, where to live, how to avoid certain situations, and how to take that first step into adulthood. My life is no longer a song with an ending; it is a constant journey where each song’s end is the beginning of a new memory. A life that is both beautiful and tragic, upbeat and discordant, hopeful and uncertain. I may never know the road ahead, but I’ll be listening to every note.

Composing and singing my original music is an outlet for my emotions. I write about things that matter to me, such as positive memories, friends, or experiences that have shaped me. Music helps me see the world differently, and it encourages me to turn my experiences into art.
