A Rose's Thorns

  • My work focuses on creating visual stories by designing and developing characters. I have always been interested in character design. In elementary school, I enjoyed reading fantasy books; but, specifically, I would enjoy imagining what each character in the book I was reading looked like, and that would inspire me to draw the characters and settings that I envisioned when I read.

I was introduced to video games by my father, and they enthralled me. I noticed how the games I played used character design to give us a sense of what the character was like before they even spoke a word. Through varying use of color palettes, silhouettes, and clothing styles, each character was brought to life and was easy to differentiate. It was through video games that I began to see the true power of what I was interested in – character design could truly bring a character to life.

In middle school, I began to draw characters from my own imagination. I also became interested in seeing how a character could interact with their surroundings in art; I started to draw my characters in different settings and environments, and I began to try to incorporate my love of character design with different compositions to make my pieces more interesting to look at.

Art became an important outlet for my creative ideas. By using backgrounds in my art and having characters interact with them, I realized that I could create and enhance the lives and stories of the characters that I loved designing.

Now, I try to explore life and characters by using varying subjects and mediums. I can bring character to objects by drawing them in unique ways, but I can also try to capture the life before me by painting realistic portraits. I make sure that everything I create expresses its character through a variety of artistic techniques, just like in the games I played when I was young.

  • Expressing my creativity allows me to go beyond what is there physically and gives me the ability to create things that otherwise would not exist; like a form of magic. This makes me happy and more satisfied with my life.
