A Lotus Pond

  • A Lotus Pond-Oil on Canvas

This painting displays a group of koi fish within a lotus pond, the vibrance of the blue complimenting the bright reddish hues of the fish. This was my second time working with oil paints, a medium that inspired me after visiting museums in Italy and seeing works created by the painters of the Renaissance. Since I was fairly new to this medium, I treated this painting as an experiment to see with what I could do with it and assess my abilities. This painting was quite fun to finish and I tried to focus on the details as well as the colors that composed the painting, keeping the palate cohesive together by utilizing the same group of shades to mix my paints. The reddish hue of the fish was by far my favorite color used in this painting, because it taught me how versatile colors can be. When mixing this color into different shades of green and blue, it provided me with darker shades of colors that fit in better with the painting than premixed shades. It made me realize how my color range was limited and that experimenting can really pay off. This painting took a long time for me to finish, and I am quite proud of how it turned out.

  • Exploring and expressing my creativity emboldens me to at least try new things, all the while remaining a sense of security that embraces me with comfort and provides an outlet to express my emotions. Through experimenting with new mediums in my art, I have become more confident as a person.
