A Bowl of Life

Neha N.

  • This artwork features a bowl of pears of various colors and sizes. The painting was created after a trip to the grocery store as I noticed the great vibrant nature of the fruits aisle, and specifically, amongst the pears. In today’s unprecedented world, even a mere trip to the grocery store can cause feelings of uncertainty and worry due to inflation. However, if we decide to take a closer look and observe the world from a different perspective, we can find beauty in even the simplest of scenes. I wish to highlight the positives of what might seem to be an ordinary fruit: every pear is bright and unique in their own way. Yet, they all coexist and add to the beauty of the whole bowl; the bowl represents the beauty in diversity.

Creating this piece was one of my first times experimenting with the concept of mixed media and utilizing more unconventional materials to add to the message. For example, I experimented with using ink for bold colors for the first time. I tried techniques such as stippling to showcase texture and contrast. I also decided to include non-traditional materials such as receipts from the grocery store and newspaper clippings regarding various current affairs. Scrapbook paper cuttings were also used to establish contrast. I attempted to utilize a bright and broad array of colors to highlight the pears’ vibrancy.

  • Creativity is a vehicle for storytelling. Every brush stroke builds a tale with an infinite amount of endings and interpretations. It is a story that is written by the observer, but initiated by the creator. Art gives me an opportunity to tell my story and understand that of others.
