What Happened To You?

  • CD Case Design, made in Photoshop.

This piece was originally a project for my multimedia art class in my Junior year of high school. I knew I wanted to make something that felt melancholic, and was inspired by the dual symbolism of butterflies. Both of rebirth, change, and hope, as well as the continuation of life after death.

By combining these ideas, I found they meant the continuation of life after a drastic change in someone's life, that has fundamentally changed them. The questions of 'Who are you?' and 'What happened to you?' imply this message in a more somber tone, as if someone has changed and someone else wasn't prepared for it. (In hindsight, this may have been about my unspoken fears of coming out as nonbinary, but that was not the intentional purpose)

As for the color pallet, I was drawn towards high color contrast, hence the blue butterflies and red starbursts, while the backgrounds remained more neutral in tone.

  • Creativity is the truest form of self expression. Whether it be visual art, music, clothing, or even creative problem solving, you are presenting yourself to the people around you, in the way that feels most 'real' to you.
