Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 by F. Mendelssohn

Chiara C.

  • As long as I remember I have loved music. I started to learn to play the violin when I was 4 years old. Except for my great-great grandfather no one in my family has ever played this instrument, so I do not really recall why I asked my parents and insisted that I wanted to learn the violin. I started on a tiny violin and still remember all the Twinkle variations with which I started. When my first violin teacher moved to Southern California she recommended that I join Villa Sinfonia, a group based in San Francisco that offers individual and group lessons as well as chamber music and orchestra. And I have been part of Villa Sinfonia since I was 5 years old.

Playing the violin brings me joy. I enjoy playing after school, in chamber music settings and in orchestra. When I practice, I seem to be in a different world with just the music and me. When I play chamber music, I enjoy being part of a small group with the instruments seeming to talk with each other, with every voice being heard and adding meaningfully to the conversation. In orchestra, especially during performances, we all seem to be contributing to something bigger. Performing in recitals and concerts brings me joy because I often love the pieces that I am playing. I also want to share my joy and love for the music with my audience. Furthermore, in recitals I enjoy listening to others perform.

The video that I am submitting is an excerpt of a 13 minute video of the first movement of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor. Felix Mendelssohn composed this concerto in 1844 in Leipzig, Germany and it is one of his most famous pieces. This is also the most memorable piece I have ever performed.

I chose to work on this piece after my beloved violin teacher, Mr. Oakley, passed. This piece reminds me of him and whenever I am playing this piece I feel his presence. This piece is very lively which he usually was. Mr.Oakley has and continues to inspire me whenever I play the violin.

I also hope that by playing this piece others realize the beauty of the violin and how much teachers can help you and mean to you.

  • Creativity to me means the ability to express oneself or do something unique and out of the ordinary or a twist of something normal. When someone is creative they express something original. Even though someone else wrote the music, I put my heart into my playing, creating something special.
