This Charming Man by The Smiths

Henry G.

  • I have spent years on this song. At the beginning of quarantine, I was just starting to get back into guitar, what with all the new time I had on my hands. As I got better, I found myself just playing simple songs consisting of simple barre and open chords. There wasn't any diversity, and it got boring after a while. I decided that I wanted to commit myself to learning one full song, start to finish, and perfecting it. I eventually chose ""This Charming Man"", a song by The Smiths, after weeks of playing it on repeat. Learning the song took me about a year. By then, I was able to play along with the song, only messing up a couple of times. I then spent time trying to get my tone as close as possible to Johnny Marr's. Since I didn't have the same exact gear as the legend himself, I knew I wasn't going to get it exactly right, but using my Chorus, Distortion, and Modulation pedals, I was able to achieve a somewhat similar sound.

My cover of "This Charming Man" is a raw and honest cover, not devoid of mistakes or room for improvement. I wanted my cover to portray the challenge it takes to play this song, and the pure musical genius that is Johnny Marr, and I feel my cover encapsulates that energy perfectly.

  • Creative, put simply, is the expression of one's interest and identity. The way in which they choose to express themselves is completely up to them, but creativity at its core is the expression of one's heart and soul in the form of art.
