The Monitor

The Monitor is a dystopian piece about a man whose job is to watch citizens through cameras, and falls in love with a girl through his computer screen. I originally wrote this as a longer piece for Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards earlier this semester but I’ve shortened it for the Creative Youth Writing Awards. I wrote this piece to critique the society we live in today, and to bring some of the issues we are faced with to light. I got the inspiration for this piece when I read an article on how some grocery stores have cameras to see what products people like or not. I thought that was creepy, and then thought about what would happen to society if there were cameras hidden everywhere, and we were constantly being watched. I also thought about how in our world there are predators preying on younger girls, and I also wanted to feature that problem of our society in my piece.

Creativity for me means a way to express myself. It is a way that I can let out my feelings about what I'm going through or just the world in general. Writing can help me process what I'm feeling, and is something that I really enjoy. Creativity gives me the freedom to do things in a different way.
