This song is about discovery while yearning for something unreal. In our modern world of social media, editing, and other tools, we have an idealized view of the way the world is and should be. This can lead us to change ourselves to strive toward something that looks perfect. In the end, we often realize that this idealized version does not really exist. Some might appear flawless, but everything- and everyone- has hidden flaws. "California" explores the discovery of one of these flaws- loneliness- that can come even with the most outwardly exquisite reality.

To me, creativity means taking what is around me and turning it into something powerful and new. This can be something physical, like nature, or an emotion or idea. In this way my creativity is a translation of something profound and difficult to describe into an impactful, communicable form.
