Wrestling With Jiminy Cricket

  • Regret and guilt are major themes that I wanted to tackle with this excerpt. My protagonist’s decision to return for someone, despite intense hatred, stems from deep feelings of guilt concerning the death of her older sister. Despite living most of her life alone, and looking out only for herself, Kia makes a major decision that changes the entire storyline– simultaneously lifting weight off her own conscience. I have been writing this WIP since freshman year; it’s set in an Earth populated by mythical creatures after the sudden, inexplicable disappearance of humans. Many of the themes I’m pursuing reflect my own struggles— namely, the struggle to convince myself that humanity is worth saving. As my characters struggle with their own arcs— some with recklessness, others with selfishness, I’m discovering parts of myself that I didn’t know existed. Whether or not I end up publishing this story, it has changed me.

  • Creativity is to let yourself go, to create without boundaries. Creativity is storytelling at its core, to live vicariously through people in extraordinary situations. Creativity is to find joy. If I want to be anything in this life, I want to be a storyteller. Onstage, or with paper and pen.
