The Winner’s Dilemma

I wrote this piece to express the feeling of being stuck on the treadmill of winning and being the best. This may sound like a desirable thing but is, in reality, a suffocating pressure that stumbles the victor. It’s hard to come down from a place of being a champion, of excelling in something; this is why those who accomplish great things often find themselves on a path of constant pressure to maintain their performance. During my drafting process, I wrote with an intentional emphasis on every pause and breath between lines as a means to create rhythm and a fast-moving pace of reading. My use of unexpected line breaks and enjambment adds to an uneasy and rushed mood that communicates the narrator’s frustration and discomfort. On the other hand, I also used assonance heavily throughout the poem to create a melodic and cohesive reading experience for the audience.

Creativity is my way of discovering my capabilities and forming my uniquely personal thoughts and ideas into tangible works of art and writing. My creativity is not subject to others’ opinions and pressures but is rather an individual need to explore an art that is all for me.
