Woman’s Work

Kate Bush’s haunting vocals in “This Woman’s Work” have been the soundtrack of countless private moments with my mom. She and I would sing and dance to it together, though I was far too young to understand what the song meant to her. As the years have gone by, I have seen my mother keep a brave face through everything, no matter how much the world tries to push her down. In a way, this dance represents the struggle she and every other woman faces in a world that doesn’t appreciate us. Now more than ever, we are not allowed to be overwhelmed by the burdens of womanhood, so I hoped to express that hidden vulnerability, as well as how we must stand up and face the world that is so desperate to silence us.

Creativity, to me, means escape from myself. When I create, I am not just me, I am the story that needs to be told. My doubts are erased, and I become something more; I become the music and the movement and the rest of the world melts away.
