Nobody

Jasmine L.

  • Dance has always been my pathway to catharsis. This piece was made to embody my feelings of alienation, which I often inflict on myself through a fear of affection. The dance explores the betrayal of the self, where my body acts as a separate, antagonistic entity at times. In the beginning, I am turned in and sickled to express cowardice and self-inflicted isolation. There are moments where I’m turned out—open to embracing the world and its people—but it quickly reverts to the original closed-off positioning. As the music builds, my movements grow more grand and open to the audience—culminating in a state of desperation to find ”someone”. But in the end, my body slowly breaks down, ending on the ground in a fetal position. In the creative process, I was inspired by partnering dances (waltz, west-coast swing) to aid my choreography.

  • To me, creativity means the ability to conjure the human experience in art. In dance, I find ways to communicate my emotions to the audience, things I hope they can resonate with.
