Where I’m From

Alison W.

  • This poem embraces my cultural heritage, my parents’ journey, and where I now call home. It blends these influences to shape who I am. It highlights the themes of growth, resilience, and gratitude, showing how my roots and environment contribute to my identity and personality. I focused on intersectionality, which I explored through my high school class, ethnic studies. I desired to use vivid imagery to allow the reader to not only imagine but feel and experience my writing. When all weaved together, I wanted to show the reader my traditions, sense of belonging, my family, and “me.”

  • To me creativity means starting from a blank canvas and being able to use what you have to make something beautiful and unique with your raw imagination and emotions. Creativity allows me to put myself on a canvas and communicate in ways that are personal and meaningful.
