When Mountains Meet the Soul

Xitong H.

  • My artwork stems from a deep exploration of Chinese heritage, inspired by the ancient “Shanshui” style of paintings from the Tang Dynasty. This traditional art form features mountains, clouds, and pine trees, symbolizing balance and longevity. Like this ancient style, my piece aims to capture the harmony between nature and humanity. It began as a vivid image in my mind. I started by sketching the composition, highlighting key shapes. The process was meticulous yet exhilarating, as I created props like embroidery hoops adorned with “Shanshui” designs. I focused on the model’s makeup and hair to embody the spirit of nature, painting cranes on her back and styling her hair to resemble mist. I then set the backdrop and lighting, working with my model to bring my vision to life. Ultimately, by sharing my journey of cultural exploration, I hope to inspire others to embrace their stories and appreciate our individuality.

  • My art is my voice. Growing up as an immigrant in America, I faced language barriers that made it difficult to express my deepest thoughts, even to my closest family. My creativity has led me to a powerful means of expression and self-understanding through the lens of my camera.
