A Rocking Chair

  • I have always had great interest in the intersection of art and math, two subjects that I love. I believe there is much beauty to be found in math and in the natural world. Taking inspiration from that philosophy, I designed a geometric yet elegant rocking chair that I loved. Apart from many hours of brainstorming and drawing, reaching my design also required a fair bit of measuring and calculations. For example, the combination of the chair’s center of gravity and rocker radius allows it to rock safely and smoothly. This piece allowed me to experience the joy of hands-on work while also helping me develop my skills working with industrial machinery. Working through many challenges along the way, the final result is the product of exploring the combination of elegance and functional form.

  • Creativity is what makes humans unique. It’s fundamental to human innovation and achievement, while also being a source of beauty, joy and connection in life. But creativity is also at the heart of self-expression and self-discovery, shaping our interactions with the world and establishing within us a sense of self.
