Weighted Clay Women

Morgan O.

  • This piece was originally written to a photograph by Mark Coggins of a woman resting on a pig’s back in its pen. As I thought of the word “pig” and the many ways we use “pig”, I realized this had to be a piece about body image. Personally, I have felt like a “pig” in the sense that I have felt ugly, or fat. I made the decision to have the pig narrate the piece from its point of view. I made this decision because I felt it would add a level of depth to the piece. When we have chosen to associate pigs with the opposite of beauty, it makes you wonder what a pig would think of that. Through this piece we see the pig interpret the woman’s dream of feeling the pressure body image lays on us.

  • Creativity to me, means the ability to be free in my mind. When I write, I am able to communicate parts of myself I couldn’t do otherwise. It is a place to feel safe in my emotions, and explore all the worlds in my head.
