The Thing

Clara C.

Colored pencil, graphite, Magazine

  • My art demonstrates the overwhelming hold perfectionism has on me and challenged me to embrace my imperfections to create meaningful art for other people struggling with self love. I emphasized the ugliness of ”beauty” with grotesque pictures of over analyzing my teeth, my nose, and my overall appearance with hopes that other people will be able to see the absurdity of it all. With many magazine cutout words scattered, the most important to me are ”The Thing Frees Herself”. These words are meant to demonstrate my change from categorizing myself as an object made for beauty, and deminished to a ”thing”, to a girl with internal value and worth, freeing ”herself”. ”Anatomy, isn’t it romantic” is strategically placed underneath pictures of me obsessing over the appearance of my mouth, pulling it in painful directions to show how we as humans romanize perfection regardless of its hideous effects on the mind.

  • Creativity the is unrestrained freedom to create and express in a way that is true to your beliefs, emotions, and yourself as a whole.
