The Adequate

Sophia G.

  • The price of academic ambition. This was the purpose of me writing The Adequate, to convey the suffocating atmosphere and pressure that students endure daily; molding them to academic achievers, to be admitted into prestigious colleges. Nowadays, society associates this to a student’s worth. I experienced this and saw it in others too. As a senior, it feels like my worth will only be achieved through entering prestigious schools, rising up class ranks, and work experience. The word “adequate” rang through my mind. Am I finally adequate if I achieve more? So instead, I found worth in Jesus. I wrote this as a juxtaposed narrative showing a dystopian world where success comes at sacrificial costs, paralleling Victoria’s real world of college competitions. Victoria is named for her victories and after Victor in Frankenstein, who also sacrificed for unhealthy pursuits of knowledge. To all students: you are worth MORE than academics.

  • My creativity is a way that I can express myself and get my ideas down on paper, creating the works that embodies the ideas that I wish to get across. The way I see it- is that creativity is a gift we all have, a gift that has the power to carve ourselves, the lives around us, and society as a whole. Whether you’re an artist, writer, dancer... with your creativity, you can carve something truly impactful. So use it!
