Subito for Violin and Piano

  • In performing Subito by Witold Lutosławski, I was drawn to its stark contrasts and surprising shifts, each moment feeling like an unexpected revelation. Composed in 1992, Subito was one of Lutosławski’s final works and was initially commissioned for the Indianapolis International Music Competition and dedicated to one of my favorite violinists, Josef Gingold. Known for incorporating aleatory elements, here he used his signature style within a controlled form, creating tension between structure and spontaneity. Subito is a study in unpredictability, with sudden shifts in dynamics, tempo, and texture. These elements draw the performer and listener into a world where stability is always on the edge of interruption, mirroring life’s own unexpected twists. Through this piece, I aimed to convey a raw immediacy, hoping to leave the listener captivated by the beauty of unpredictability.

  • In a musical sense, creativity speaks to me as a opportunity to produce my own interpretation of music within the framework of the composer. Although the composer defines the character and tone of the piece, creativity allows me to implement my personal nuances to phrasing/expression, reflecting my individuality.
