This is an excerpt from a longer fantasy novel I’m writing, titled Lightborne. It follows a young soldier named Syril as she grapples with her identity as a fugitive and as a mortal imbued with divine magic. Having escaped from the tyrannical regime that she once served, Syril now finds herself as a catalyst figure for the budding rebellion forces, alongside the ragtag group of outcasts that she has become a part of. Given that this excerpt takes place in the very beginning of the book, however, Syril’s loyalties still lie with the monarchy, and she is desperate to prove herself worthy of becoming a knight.
