Shim Cheong’s Sacrifice

  • In my Ceramics class I was tasked with a reinterpretation of a children’s story. This is based of the Korean folktale of Shim Cheong. Shim Cheong is a filial daughter who sacrifices her life to repay her blind father’s debt. Originally she sacrifices herself to the sea to restore her father’s eyesight and her act grants her mercy from the Sea King who then sends her back to land to become the empress. My reinterpretation shows the Sea King falling madly in love with Shim Cheong as he sees the goodness within her heart. Shim Cheong wants to take one last look at her father but the Sea King holds her back furiously. He purposely blindfolds her and drags her back to the bottom of the sea within a lotus flower. I have loved this tale as a child and I wanted to represent my Korean culture with a twist..

  • Creativity has never been limited to only art. It is the formation of your inner desires that seek out expression from within you. Creativity is one of the most important things you can grasp as it branches out and takes root in every inch of the world.
