recognize me

Olive K.

  • It started with the song, Spiderwebs, by Alfie Jukes. When I first heard it, I immediately saw myself choreographing a piece to it. I was inspired by the story that the songwriter was telling, especially by the lines, “Will you recognize me?/If our blue or brown eyes meet in the crowd.” I pictured making eye contact with a person across a room, hallway, or street, now a stranger whose secrets I still hold. This is an experience I could link back to my own life, a feeling that would drive the rest of my choreographing process. I put on the song in my dance production class and filmed myself improvising. I find that a lot of my best choreography stems from improvising to a song. I’ve discovered that when improvising, my movements sometimes fit more organically with the music and reflect the emotion of the dance.

  • To me creativity is storytelling and self-expression. In relation to dance specifically it is typically non-verbal. This is especially healing and valuable to me because often words cannot say what we are truly feeling. Expressing complex emotions through movement and in a productive manner is central in my life.
