For the Lāhui

This dance speaks about protecting one’s land, which is so crucial in today’s world with many places being stripped of their people and land. The lyrics write: ”My beloved flag waves ever more in the last year’s heights of the sky. Always and forevermore in peace and tranquility, hail your name, oh Hawaii my beloved motherland. To you my nation be bold and fearless, stand as kānaka, and be steadfast in your place. For the freedom of our land remains always in the truth of our people.” When first listening to this song, I immediately knew it would be perfect to share the message of protecting and defending our homeland. Even if one hasn’t personally experienced a political conflict, one can still empathize with those that have to fight daily.

Being creative, to me, feels like emptying my brain of all its thoughts and ideas, and transforming them into works of art. Without creativity, I wouldn’t have a way to organize and present myself in a way for all to understand.
