This painting shows my mother opening bills at our kitchen table. My mother really values philanthropy, and she always tells me that the point of getting a job isn’t to make money, but to help others. And although I know she knows how to be responsible with money, it makes me nervous when she says she gave someone money without discussing it with my father, or talks about how she’s spent money. I know she grew up in a financially unstable situation, and so I think it’s amazing that she can help people who are in the same situation she was in. But still, I can’t completely shake my materialistic instincts when I see how gas prices are changing or my father talks about how he used to buy meals for a dollar. Sometimes I wonder what it means, or what it takes, to have a good heart.

Creativity is expressing your ideas in a way that’s unique to you. As artists, we draw inspiration from our lives or what we see and hear, and put that into our art. Creativity bridges the gap between life and art.
