Opposites Don’t Always Attract

  • “Opposites Don’t Always Attract” explores the beauty and pain of the human experience. As individuals, we find ourselves through life’s joys and struggles, seeking connection with others. After my hospitalization, I longed for the relationships my peers had already formed: friendships, romantic relationships, and a sense of belonging. I felt an invisible wall between myself and the possibility of a genuine connection. In retaliation to this feeling, I turned to art to better understand love, hate, connection, and disconnection. I wanted to capture the essence of ”opposites attract” in human relationships: the desire to connect with someone deeply, both physically, mentally, and spiritually. I used the contrast of oil and water to symbolize this yearning, illustrating that love can bring us close, but it is not always enough to make us truly intertwined. It shows that human connection is complex, sometimes just a tangle, not a seamless union.

  • Creativity to me is the ability to alter and educate minds for the better, generate valuable ideas, and express/understand the hopes and dreams of people from all walks of life, while utilizing imagination and innovation. It is simply the ability to bring others closer, no matter the medium.
