Only In Passing

Inspired by true experiences, I wrote ”Only In Passing” remembering the day a beloved horse passed away after a long battle with an ignored illness. Using passive narration, the short story is about the importance to stay present in our lives, even during the sorrowful, ireful, and uncomfortable moments. After voluntarily removing themselves from grieving and respecting Leta, the deceased horse, the narrator learns by the end of the story it is better to feel the painful chapters of life than not feel at all. One of the symbols I use to convey this message is through names. The three named characters (Atticus, Justine, and Faith) each represent the three stages of life, the aesthetic, the ethical, and the religious. “Only In Passing” connects my own life to a theme of accepting all aspects in life, including the agony that comes with loss.

Creativity is about embracing the depths of imagination and giving it the freedom to express itself whether that’s on the stage, page, or screen. Creativity is a fundamental part of my life that opens doors to new worlds, allowing me to escape from reality and get lost in my stories.
