Niña’s del Maiz

Ixchel E.

Mixed media, acrylic paints, colored pencils and paint markers.

  • Niña’s del Maiz is a piece that is dedicated to my personal struggle with identity as a Mexicana in the U.S. This piece demonstrates my current self being embraced by my younger self. As a young child I felt deeply connected to my culture and a lot of that was due to my strong fluency in skills in Spanish. Over the years, I’ve struggled to hold a deep connection to my culture and have found myself questioning all of the ways in which my generation defines identity. My younger self was not bound to these questions, she was unapologetic about who she was, what she loved and how she was viewed by others. And, while I can no longer go back to that stage in my life, my younger self reminds me that to be fearless and to reconcile with who I’ve become.

  • the practice of letting out my feelings in a positive and beautiful way like painting drawing digital art.
