My Inheritance

Tina D.

Color Pencil

  • On the topic of inheritance, the first thing I think of is food. Namely, the foods that I grew up watching and helping my grandmother make: dumplings, bao, or Chinese pancakes. The memories I have of these foods are extremely nostalgic and vivid for me; I wanted to convey those feelings with my use of color and material. This piece depicts a memory of making one of my favorite foods, Chinese Scallion Pancakes. I chose color pencil as my medium specifically because of how it enabled me to experiment with mimicking different textures through the same material. Additionally, I challenged myself to use as little black as possible, in order to maximize the nostalgic effect that I was trying to achieve. The most difficult aspect of this piece was trying to depict flour, scattered across the wooden board, in a recognizable way.
