Hand-Me-Downs

Anonymous

Color pencil, mixed-media paper

  • I wanted to create a piece from the perspective of hand-me-downs, which in this artwork, is the white hat. Over the years, the cap has traveled all over the world—first with my two older sisters, and then me. With each passing year, the hat gets dirtier from its adventures, however, it still carries the memories of each moment it’s been through. While hand-me-downs have previously been something I was ashamed of, I now appreciate it, feeling sentimental in knowing it brings me closer to my siblings. I now wear them with pride, valuing them almost like a family tradition.

  • To me, creativity is expressing oneself in a way that sometimes can’t be done with words. Specifically to me, this means being able to create artworks that have significance to me, allowing me to get my emotions out on paper.
