Loved and Lost

Ella M.

  • This piece captures the stark contrast between the intimacy of a relationship and the bittersweet absence that follows. It’s the desperate anticipation of a high only felt in their presence–stolen away when they’re gone. Happiness fades, emotional walls crumble or lock tight, leaving me searching for fragments of what once was—a hopeless torment bound to memories of love and loss. I began by listening to the lyrics and identifying a line that encapsulated the song’s essence: “In my head, I treasure the things I’ve loved and lost.” I incorporated loose, flowing movements to contrast with sharp, harsh elements, symbolizing the love within a relationship and the bitterness that follows. I emphasized a gaze toward a specific corner, representing the person or thing I had “loved and lost,” revisiting it at the end to close the piece.

  • To me, creativity is the ability to give meaning to the simple and unassuming while challenging the limits of what is “undefined.”
