  • I decided to recreate Da Vinci’s “La Scapigliata” as a sketch instead of an oil painting. I created a grid on the sketch paper to help me accurately transfer the proportion of my reference image onto my surface. I had to mathematically calculate the distance between each grid length. Since the original piece was left unfinished and many of the lines were unclear, I had to interpret angles of her face to outline. I added shading to give the artwork depth. This unfinished piece portrays a young woman with disheveled hair. The uncombed hair suggests Da Vinci was depicting the natural beauty and power inherent in women. Some say Da Vinci was foreshadowing the feminist movement and showing the unseen equality between men and women. I was drawn to complete this artwork because of its beauty and that inspiring hidden message.

  • Creativity can mean taking a different approach to something. That is why I chose to make a sketch rather than an oil painting.
