King of the Shore

This painting was inspired by my love of birdwatching and my hometown. I’m incredibly lucky to live in a place with easy access to such beautiful natural places. I wanted to make a painting to commemorate the wonderfully unique nature and wildlife we have here. I knew I wanted it to be focused on a bird that’s well known to this region, and there is none more iconic than the great blue heron. With its impressive height and elegant crown of features, it truly is the king of the shore. This project was also a chance for me to try something new. The border around the painting is a hardened mixture of glue, paint, and cornstarch which I engraved with a carving tool. This is the first time I have made or used something like this and I really love the final product!

Creativity is what brings joy to and enriches my life. I’ve always loved to be able express myself through art and learn new artistic skills. When I have free time it’s usually devoted to creating something.
