• Artist Statement

  I used only hand building techniques. First, I made a pinch pot for the body. Then, I made the top hat using thin slabs. I added the facial features and gave it a grumpy and petulant expression. I thought it would be cute and comical, and it really shows personality. Next, I attached the base to a circular slab and cut tentacles out. I shaped them and form the final shape. After firing, I used underglazes to color my grumpy octopus, mixing the different glazes like watercolors. I gave it a glossy clear glaze and it was finished.

• Creative Statement

  Creativity is the ability to look at something and imagine something else, the ability to see a story in something. For example, I look at a paintbrush and I see a best friend, who will help me express myself.
