Flare

Drayson J.

  • This candid photograph was captured in Washington, D.C., in February 2024. The title, “Flare,” refers to both the bright composition and the fleeting moment it captures. I was crossing the street when a swarm of bikers suddenly enveloped me. Instinct took over as my hands moved to the camera hanging around my neck. Amidst the movement and chaos, time seemed to slow down. The soft winter sunlight bathed the scene, casting long shadows and filling the air with a warm stillness. I moved my finger to the shutter button, and the camera’s red battery icon flashed. As sunlight refracted off the lens, I pressed the shutter halfway and focused on the cyclists. I pressed down further, and for a fraction of a second, time froze. An instant later, the bikers continued down the street, leaving me alone in the crosswalk with a perfect photo and a dead battery.

  • Creativity is about taking risks and doing what’s never been done before. My definition of creativity is pushing boundaries to explore oneself and the chosen artistic medium. It’s about innovation and having new ideas, and then applying those ideas in a unique way.
