’Danza’ from Invocación Y Danza (Joaquin Rodrigo)

Charlie G.

  • Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Invocación Y Danza” is a challenging but powerful piece that brings out the full potential of the guitar and embodies the Spanish spirit. In the “Danza” section that I recorded, Rodrigo references the compositions and rhythms of the prominent composer Manuel de Falla, while simultaneously weaving in traditional flamenco techniques and sounds. Learning this piece was an especially fun challenge, because like with many other Rodrigo pieces, there exist many different editions. Some of these editions can vary greatly, so it was fun to patch together aspects of each until eventually I created my own interpretation. Learning this piece was especially rewarding, because the process taught me a variety of new techniques that I will always have with me. I hope you enjoy!

  • For me, creativity means making the most out of the tools at your disposal. When I play the guitar, I seek to harness the full scope of this expressive instrument, using a wide variety of techniques to create a tapestry of unique tones and sounds.
