Capriccio for Piano Quintet

Edith T.

  • Capriccio for Piano Quintet is a playful piece that also explores the sometimes fine line between the whimsical and the unsettling. The opening is loud and mischievous, with a sense of eerie comedy and insistent momentum. It then transitions to a second theme that slithers through a section of polyrhythms and chromaticism, maintaining a feverish intensity. Following sonata-allegro form, the piece is inspired by the lively and energetic character of a traditional capriccio, while emphasizing the idea of the unpredictable and often jarring shifts that we associate with the everyday definition of a “caprice.”

  • Creativity is working with all the forms and traditions available to us to open up new and unexpected possibilities for expression and meaning. It is the process of taking what we’re given and seeing how far it can go to speak to our own experiences and perspectives.
